Tobias Bernstrup is one of Sweden’s most important performance and new media based artists being internationally active for more than a decade.
He has constructed his own unmistakable performance persona in elaborate costumes in glossy latex and heavy make up during these years. Almost Human will be his 2nd solo exhibition at the gallery.

Through re-medialization Bernstrup addresses questions about identity and gender and the blurred border between the virtual and the real. He mixes classicism, gothic noir with video game aesthetics.

In the new exhibition he presents, for the very first time, paintings, costume sketches and sculptural works. One of the central works in the exhibition is a body casting based on his most recent performance project ASFR* presented at the MADRE Museum of Contemporary art in Naples in 2009.

As a performing artist and musician Tobias Bernstrup has released several CD's and vinyl records of his own compositions. The new EP "1984" (on Dutch label Enfant Terrible) will be released during the exhibition.

Over the years Tobias Bernstrup's works has been exhibited in a large number of major institutions, museums and galleries worldwide among these; Palais de Tokyo, Basel Museum Für Gegenwartskunst, Biennale de Lyon, Busan Biennale, Shanghai Duolun MoMA, North Miami MoCA, MASS MoCA, The Kitchen New York and Moderna Museet. Further in April 2010 Tobias will present a solo exhibition at Stenasalen Göteborgs konstmuseum.

*Robot fetishism (also ASFR or techno sexuality) is a fetishist attraction to humanoid or non-humanoid robots; also to people acting like robots or people dressed in robot costumes. A less common fantasy involves transformation into a robot. In these ways it is similar to agalmatophilia which involves attraction to or transformation into statues or mannequins.
